Vitalik Buterin Plans Cypherpunk Upgrade for Ethereum

  • Vitalik Buterin plans a bolt-on system to enhance Ethereum without replacing it.
  • Upgrades target state tree, consensus, VM design, ZK compatibility, and censorship resistance.
  • Transition may take five years, though AI-assisted coding could accelerate development.

On Friday, Vitalik Buterin said he plans to add a “cypherpunk-principled” system to Ethereum rather than replace it. He outlined the plan in a public reply on X. The proposal targets censorship resistance, zero-knowledge compatibility, and leaner consensus, while keeping the current Ethereum network active.

Bolt-on Strategy Replaces Rebuild Calls

Buterin responded to a community member who urged him to abandon Ethereum entirely. The post argued for rebuilding a new chain from scratch using RISC-V architecture. However, Buterin rejected that approach and outlined a different direction.

Instead, he described building a tightly integrated extension to Ethereum. This bolt-on system would coexist with the current chain. Notably, it would gradually absorb core functionality over time.

Buterin said Ethereum already survived major upgrades without downtime. He referenced the Merge as proof. Therefore, he argued similar changes could happen again, while the network remains operational.

He described the effort as creating a “cypherpunk principled non-ugly Ethereum.” The aim is interoperability, not fragmentation. As a result, developers would not need to abandon existing infrastructure.

Planned Upgrades Target Core Protocol Layers

According to Buterin, the plan includes changes to several technical components. These include the state tree, consensus design, virtual machine structure, and ZK-EVM verification. Each upgrade would improve simplicity and cryptographic efficiency.

He also highlighted censorship resistance as a system-wide requirement. That includes validator behavior and transaction inclusion. Related governance discussions already explore forced inclusion lists for validators.

Additionally, wallet standards remain under review. Current proposals include multi-signature defaults and quantum-resistant options. These efforts align with the broader push for protocol-level resilience.

Ethereum continues to face criticism over network fragmentation. Layer-2 rollups and app-specific chains have expanded rapidly. However, Buterin framed the bolt-on model as a way to unify progress.

AI Could Accelerate the Transition Timeline

Buterin estimated the transition could take five years. However, he said AI-assisted coding could shorten that timeline. Verification tools may speed up safe protocol changes.

Eventually, he said Ethereum could reimplement itself using the new system language. That shift would happen only if conditions allow. Until then, both systems would remain interoperable.

According to Buterin, the approach avoids disruption. It also preserves Ethereum’s existing user base. The strategy focuses on gradual change rather than replacement.

Ethereum, which supports smart contracts and scaling networks, would continue operating throughout the process. The plan emphasizes evolution, not abandonment, of the existing chain.

Macro investors: A BTC breakout above $76,000 and an ETH breakout above $2,400 may signal a trend reversal

Macro investor Jordi Visser believes that if Bitcoin and Ethereum break through $76,000 and $2,400 respectively, it will kick off a sustainable uptrend. He expects high inflation to push investors to seek profitable assets, and notes that the probability of an economic recession has fallen to 24%. This view contrasts with the current bearish expectations in the crypto industry.
