Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, disagreed with recent criticisms from the DOGE Department about the government’s tax spending efficiency. He believes that the extreme examples cited make up only a tiny portion of total expenditures, and optimizing solely to avoid negative opinions on Twitter may lead to missed potential opportunities. Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate and pharmaceutical company founder Vivek Ramaswamy will lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where recent tweets on how the government spends tax money have sparked discussions. The examples provided by DOGE may focus on extreme cases while overlooking potentially more valuable uses within overall expenditure. Vitalik’s perspective has sparked intense discussions among both supporters and critics. Ethereum wallet Daimo co-founder Dcposch partially agreed with Vitalik, highlighting the risk of penny-pinching on small expenses while wasting large sums. He suggested that allowing the government to exceed its defined responsibilities could lead to a “slush fund” situation like in Afghanistan. Although DOGE’s tweets may provoke public backlash against “unreasonable expenses,” their role is to provide recommendations and guidance for streamlining US government operations. Elon Musk’s initiative to involve the public in deciding the IRS’s budget reflects his commitment to reducing government spending. While the US government has yet to confirm whether DOGE will audit the IRS, the move may indicate Musk’s intention to significantly cut budgets across departments during his tenure.
