The global supermarket chain SPAR has officially started accepting Bitcoin payments at its store in Zug, Switzerland.

This move allows customers to make direct payments with Bitcoin via the Lightning Network using DFX Swiss’s OpenCryptoPay solution for instant and seamless transactions at checkout.

Located in the heart of Zug, commonly known as the “Crypto Valley”, the store has now joined the rapidly growing list of 1,013 businesses in Switzerland that accept Bitcoin.

DFX Swiss said, “This SPAR location is one of the first supermarkets in Switzerland where you can make direct payments at the checkout using Bitcoin via LNURL.”

Bitcoin Association Switzerland director Rahim Taghizadegan introduced the simplicity of the payment process: “Just scan a static QR code, send satoshi, and have it instantly and easily recorded by the cashier.”

Zug’s leadership in the adoption of cryptocurrencies is being embraced by other Swiss cities like Lugano, which has gained international attention with its ambitious “Plan ₿” initiative. Supported by Mayor Michele Foletti, the plan positions Bitcoin as a de facto legal payment method in the city, enabling its use for taxes, public services, and purchases from hundreds of local vendors.
