According to DailyStar, Ellie Hart mistook the USB for a regular flash drive, but it was actually her fiancé Tom’s Bitcoin wallet, with an estimated amount worth around £3 million. The couple said they have been facing many difficulties in their lives since the incident. Ellie, a 34-year-old primary school teacher, said: “It was just in a drawer with old receipts, broken batteries and tangled wires. I thought it was one of the school’s flash drives and threw it away without thinking.” Cannot ‘unlock’ Bitcoin assets The heartbreaking truth was revealed a few days later when Tom, a 36-year-old web developer, could not find the USB and asked Ellie where it had disappeared to. Immediately, she realized her mistake and recounted what had happened. “We even emptied all the trash bags. It was both a panic and a hope, but deep down I knew it was already too late,” Ellie said. She also described it as “the worst mistake I ever made.” Without the USB, Tom couldn’t access his “Bitcoin legacy.” This is the amount of Bitcoin that Tom invested back in 2013 when the price was still low. Although he didn’t blame Ellie, Tom’s silence spoke volumes. Ellie Hart said that getting through this situation was not easy. “You keep replaying it in your head, right when you pick up the device, right when it falls into the trash. I would do anything to fix this mistake. I never thought something valuable could look so ordinary. If you keep money or anything valuable on a USB drive, label it, lock it up, don’t make the mistake I did,” she advised.
