The federal court ruled illegal, stepping in to block the Trump administration's dissolution of the Voice of America radio station.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth intervened to block the Trump administration from dissolving the (Voice Of America) broadcasting station, ruling that the Trump administration illegally halted its operations. Lawyers for Voice of America employees and contractors requested the judge to restore the station's operations before Trump cut funding, and Lamberth granted this request, ordering the restoration of two independent broadcasting networks operated by Voice of America and the U.S. Agency for Global Media: Radio Free Asia and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks, until the lawsuit is resolved. Meanwhile, the judge dismissed the requests for funding cuts for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the Open Technology Fund.
Royce Lamberth pointed out in a written ruling that the U.S. Global Media Agency has never finalized a funding agreement with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty for this fiscal year, and the Open Technology Fund also withdrew its request for a temporary restraining order earlier this year. Radio Free Asia and the Middle East Broadcasting Network do have existing funding agreements, and like Voice of America, are funded by congressional appropriations. The judge stated that the Trump administration's funding cuts were a hasty approach.
For the first time in its 83-year history, Voice of America has been asked to dissolve its operations.
Voice of America was founded by Congress and has a history of 83 years. U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ruled that the government illegally demanded Voice of America to cease operations. Documents provided to the court by the plaintiff's lawyer on March 26 show that nearly all of Voice of America's 1,300 employees were scheduled to take leave, and 500 contractors were also informed that their contracts would be terminated at the end of last month.
The U.S. Agency for Global Media, which is responsible for managing Voice of America, also operates other broadcasting entities including Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, and Radio Free Afghanistan. Congress has appropriated nearly $860 million for global media agencies for this fiscal year.
On March 14, Trump issued an executive order to cut funding for global media organizations and six other entities unrelated to the federal government, leading to an immediate halt for Voice of America. This order also terminated contracts for news organizations, including the Associated Press.
Voice of America is categorized as left-wing media by Trump.
Voice of America has been operating since World War II, broadcasting news to authoritarian countries without press freedom. It was initially a counter to Nazi propaganda and played a role in containing communism during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. However, as time and history have progressed, the originally anti-communist purpose of Voice of America has been perceived by Trump and his Republican allies as a media outlet with leftist bias, failing to convey American values to its audience.
The plaintiff's lawyer described Voice of America as a news outlet that provides "truthful, fair, and objective" reporting. For those living around the world who have no access to news and freedom of expression, and who cannot know what is happening in their country and abroad, this mission is of great significance. The union representing employees of the U.S. Global Media Agency stated that this ruling affirms the role of independent journalism in promoting democracy and combating misinformation.
The problem of optic neurasthenia in both eyes that cannot distinguish between left and right is not only in the United States, but also in Taiwan, and the problem is even greater, a certain benevolent brother in Nazi Hitler's military uniform rushed to the legislative court to protest, the German Institute in Taiwan and the representatives of the Israeli office in Taiwan protested in unison, making Taiwanese lose face.
