OpenAI is seizing the community platform? Against Musk's XAI, community data becomes the golden fuel for AI models.
According to reports from The Verge citing informed sources, OpenAI is developing its own community platform, which provides unique data for training AI models, holding significant value, and has become a powerful weapon for developing their own AI for companies like X and Meta.
Is OpenAI planning to develop a community platform?
Insiders indicate that the project is still in its early stages, but OpenAI has an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT image generation, which includes a social feed. CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking for external feedback on the project. It is still unclear whether OpenAI plans to release the social network as a standalone application or integrate it into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded application globally last month.
If OpenAI joins the ranks of social platforms, it will intensify the conflict between Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Previously, Altman and Musk were both co-founders of OpenAI, which was established as a non-profit organization in 2015. However, as Altman transitioned OpenAI to a for-profit model, Musk withdrew, and their relationship gradually deteriorated.
The community platform provides unique data for AI model training.
Musk's chatbot Grok showed content from X in his results, he even recently merged X and xAI into the same company, and according to Bloomberg, the acquisition of xAI shows that the most valuable thing for X in 2025 is its data. Social network profiles ( posts, comments, videos, profiles ) and have a higher value as training fuel for large language models that support chatbots ( such as xAI's Grok). X Millions of people still post on its services every day, many of them related to current events such as politics, sports, or business. Chamath Palihapitiya, a venture capitalist and Musk friend, called the dataset "the most complete, large-scale, real-time repository on the web."
Reddit also has a large-scale real-time information platform. It has signed content licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI, allowing them to use this data to train their artificial intelligence models. The transaction amount with Google is approximately $60 million per year. Meanwhile, the separate content licensing agreement between OpenAI and News Corp. is valued at approximately $50 million per year. This demonstrates the significant value of content on social media platforms.
Meta also trains Llama using its vast repository of user data.
One idea behind the OpenAI social prototype is to let AI help people share better content, and OpenAI's social application may provide OpenAI with its own unique real-time data. It seems to have become a battleground.
