For years, the "Ethereum way" was simple: L1 handles security, and L2s handle the speed. But Vitalik just threw a bit of a curveball.

He’s basically saying that just "scaling" isn't enough anymore.

If an L2 is just a faster version of Ethereum but stays in "Stage 1" (meaning they still have training wheels or centralized control), it’s not really a true extension of the network.

His new message to L2 teams? Find a reason to exist beyond just being cheap.

Ethereum L1 is actually getting pretty good at scaling on its own, so the bar for L2s just got a lot higher. We’re moving toward a "spectrum" where decentralization matters just as much as TPS.

The "L2-centric" era isn't dead, but it’s definitely getting a reality check.
