The South Korean National Assembly has launched an emergency inquiry into the martial law incident.
On December 5, Jinshi Data reported that on December 5th local time, the National Defense Committee of the South Korean National Assembly held an emergency inquiry on the “President Yin Xiyue’s proclamation and lifting of the state of emergency.” Jin Shanghao, the Vice Minister of Defense and the acting Minister of Defense, and Park Ansu, the Chief of Army Staff appointed as the Commander of Martial Law, stated during the inquiry that the orders to deploy and withdraw troops were issued by the then Minister of Defense, Kim Yong-hyun. However, the former Minister of Defense, Kim Yong-hyun, who was supposed to attend the inquiry, resigned that morning and was absent from the inquiry. Jin Shanghao, the Vice Minister of Defense who took on the role of acting Minister of Defense, stated that he opposed sending troops to participate in martial law and that it was Kim Yong-hyun who ordered the deployment of the military into the National Assembly. In addition, the Commander of the Special Warfare Command did not issue live ammunition to the military personnel participating in martial law. Park Ansu, the Chief of Army Staff appointed as the Commander of Martial Law, also stated that he, as the Commander of Martial Law, was not responsible for issuing instructions and was unaware of the involvement of the 707th Special Mission Brigade of the Army Special Warfare Command in martial law. The order to withdraw troops was also issued by the then Minister of Defense, Kim Yong-hyun.
