Upgrade again in 2026! Vitalik announced that Ethereum will further increase the Gas limit next year.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently stated that after the block Gas limit was raised from 30 million to 60 million earlier this month, the network capacity may see a significant upgrade again in 2026. He revealed that this change will not just be a simple limit adjustment, but will also involve adjustments to the Gas costs of certain operations to achieve a substantial enhancement in actual processing efficiency.

Vitalik hinted that a 5-fold increase in processing capacity is expected in 2026.

Vitalik posted on X this Tuesday, sharing the community's rapid response to the recent Gas limit increase and the plans for the next steps in scalability. He pointed out that with adjustments to Gas prices for certain operations, Ethereum's effective throughput could reach five times the level before 2025 in the future.

He wrote: “Next year we will likely raise the Gas limit again, but there will be some corresponding compensation measures.” The purpose of these adjustments is to ensure that operations with high resource consumption reflect their actual costs while avoiding resource waste.

What operations will become more expensive? Vitalik names four major categories.

In order to avoid resource abuse caused by simply raising the Gas limit, Vitalik specifically pointed out several operations that may be “adjusted upward” in 2026:

SSTORE (Storage Slot): The operation specifically when creating a new storage slot.

Precompiles: Include early cryptographic functions.

Calldata: The cost of each byte of data transmission will slightly increase.

Complex arithmetic operations (such as MODMUL): will reassess its network costs.

These adjustments are expected to suppress inefficient behavior patterns while allowing the overall trading volume to continue to grow.

The gas cap has been successfully doubled, and the community support is amazing.

The recent increase in the Gas limit of Ethereum took about a year from initial discussions to official launch, which can be considered a rapid progress. This upgrade was able to be promoted so quickly mainly thanks to the close collaboration among major Ethereum client teams (such as Geth, Nethermind, Besu, Erigon, Reth) and researchers.

The community has also demonstrated unprecedented initiative. According to statistics from community signal tools, most participants expressed their support in just a few days, which is much more efficient than the governance cycles of previous hard forks.

The next upgrade is temporarily named “Glamsterdam”, continuing the spirit of decentralization.

In the future, these changes will be integrated into a new network upgrade, and developers are currently using “Glamsterdam” as a code name. This name combines the locations of recent Devcon (Glasgow) and Devconnect (Amsterdam).

On this path of Layer 1 design called “Eternal Challenge”, Ethereum tries to strike a balance between performance, decentralization, and security. The fine-tuning of the Gas strategy is one of the key steps to achieving this goal.

This article will be upgraded again in 2026! Vitalik predicts that Ethereum will further increase the Gas limit next year, first appearing in Chain News ABMedia.
