Powell Faces a “Critical Choice”: What Market Signals Are Hidden Behind the Turmoil in Federal Reserve Leadership?

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell may be in the final weeks of his central banking leadership career.

Last Friday, the Department of Justice decided to refer the criminal investigation into the Federal Reserve headquarters renovation to the Office of the Inspector General, leaving Powell with a dilemma: whether to continue serving or to remain in office.

Without this investigation, Powell might have fully left the Federal Reserve by May 15.

But as the DOJ investigation could potentially be restarted, Powell may choose to temporarily remain in his post, or even not fully complete his originally scheduled term as a governor through January 2028.
