Sam Altman豪宅遇襲

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood was attacked twice in two days, and three suspects have already been taken into custody. On April 10, a Texas man with strong anti–artificial intelligence views threw a Molotov cocktail at the home; on April 12, a man and a woman fired shots from a car toward the home. After surveillance footage captured the license plate, police completed the arrests that afternoon.

First Attack: Molotov Cocktail and Threats to the OpenAI Headquarters

Around 3:40 a.m. on April 10, 20-year-old Texas man Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama threw a Molotov cocktail at the metal gate on the north side of Altman’s residence on Chestnut Street. Security personnel quickly put out the fire, and there was no major damage at the scene. About an hour later, the same suspect appeared near OpenAI’s headquarters in Mission Bay, threatened to burn down the building, and was immediately arrested by police. He faces charges including attempted murder, arson, and possession of a destructive device.

Investigation information shows that Moreno-Gama had previously posted extensively on social media, expressing strong opposition to artificial intelligence. He believed AI poses an existential threat to human beings and criticized the tech industry as “lacking ethics.” He had joined PauseAI’s Discord server, but PauseAI clearly denied any direct connection, stating that none of the 34 messages shared on the server contained any content inciting violence. It also removed him after the incident and fully condemned violent acts directed at individuals.

Second Attack: Shooting Incident and Two Suspects Arrested

Less than 48 hours after the first incident, around 1:40 a.m. on April 12, after a Honda sedan drove past the front of the residence, it returned and parked on the side of Lombard Street. The passenger in the front seat passenger reached his arm out of the window and allegedly fired a shot toward the residence. Surveillance cameras recorded the license plate in full, and police successfully identified the suspects that afternoon.

Summary of the Three Arrest Incidents

Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama (Age 20, Texas): Attempted murder, arson, possession of a destructive device; suspected in Molotov cocktail attack and threats against the OpenAI headquarters

Amanda Tom (Age 25): Reckless discharge of a firearm; charged with firing at Altman’s residence from inside the car

Muhamad Tarik Hussein (Age 23): Reckless discharge of a firearm; arrested in the same case as Tom; during execution of search warrants, police also found three additional firearms

Tensions Around AI and Security for Tech Executives: Altman Calls for Reducing Confrontation

After the Molotov cocktail incident, Altman posted on his blog. The article included photos of his husband, Oliver Mulherin, and his son. He said he understands public concerns about technology, but urged people to “reduce the intensity of rhetoric and actions, and work to lessen conflict within the family—both in the literal sense and in the figurative sense as well.”

San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew said that police take gun-related crimes “extremely seriously” and will pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. Notably, about five months before this attack, OpenAI employees had already initiated emergency safety procedures due to threats from anti–AI activists, indicating that the related security risks had been evident well in advance.

Spending on security protections at the top levels of technology companies continues to rise. In 2023, Tesla spent about $2.4 million on security for Musk. In 2019, Facebook’s security spending for Zuckerberg totaled $20.4 million. Specific figures on OpenAI’s spending on Altman’s security have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the motive of the suspect who attacked Sam Altman’s residence?

The suspect in the first Molotov cocktail attack, Moreno-Gama, had publicly expressed strong opposition to AI, believing that artificial intelligence poses a survival threat to human beings, and had contact with the online community of PauseAI. Police have not yet disclosed the specific motive behind the second shooting incident.

What kind of organization is PauseAI, and is it directly related to this attack?

PauseAI is a nonprofit organization that advocates pausing the development of cutting-edge AI models. The suspect in the first attack had posted 34 messages on its Discord server, but PauseAI explicitly denied any connection to the attack, saying its messages contained no violent incitement content and that it removed him after the incident, while fully condemning violent acts toward anyone.

How should tech executives respond to increasingly serious security threats?

Top tech companies spend millions to tens of millions of dollars each year to protect their CEOs. Cases already made public include Tesla’s security costs for Musk and Facebook’s annual security spending for Zuckerberg. The two consecutive attacks targeting Altman’s residence are expected to further push the industry to reassess executive security protection standards.
