This is everyone speculated to be Satoshi Nakamoto
The true identity of Bitcoin’s creator is still one of crypto’s biggest unsolved mysteries as of 2026.
Here’s the full list of the most serious candidates who keep coming up:
1. Hal Finney
- Pioneering cypherpunk legend
Received the very first Bitcoin transaction directly from Satoshi
- Deeply involved in early development
Widely considered one of the strongest early theories until his death in 2014
2. Nick Szabo
- Computer scientist who invented “Bit Gold” — the direct predecessor to Bitcoin
- His writings on digital money and smart contracts mirror the whitepaper perfectly
Has always denied it
3. Adam Back
- British cryptographer and inventor of Hashcash (the proof-of-work system Bitcoin actually uses)
- Communicated directly with Satoshi
- Latest major investigations (including 2026 New York Times) point to him as the most likely
- He has denied it multiple times
4. Len Sassaman
- Privacy advocate who built Mixmaster, the leading anonymous remailer
- Close friend of Hal Finney
- Died by suicide just months after Satoshi vanished in 2011
- Exploded in hype after the 2024 HBO documentary
5. Peter Todd
- Long-time Bitcoin Core developer
- Named as Satoshi in the 2024 HBO documentary Money Electric
- Strongly denies it and went into hiding after the film
6. Craig Wright
- The only person who publicly claims to be Satoshi
- Filed court cases and copyright claims
- Judges have repeatedly ruled he is NOT Satoshi
Widely dismissed as “Faketoshi”
Other notable mentions:
Dave Kleiman, Wei Dai, Gavin Andresen, Paul Le Roux… and wild theories about groups, governments, or even collaborative cypherpunk teams
After all these years, every major “reveal” has been debunked or remains unproven.
The mystery lives on.
