Funding and Talent Retention Challenges

Thinking Machines raised a record $2 billion in seed-stage funding in July, valuing the company at $12 billion. Later, Bloomberg reported that the company is seeking additional funding at a valuation of $50 billion. Despite impressive fundraising success, the startup is struggling to retain AI researchers. Another co-founder, Andrew Talloch, left last year for Meta's AI division, known for its attractive compensation packages. Now, with recent departures of Zoph, Metz, Shenholtz, Gai, and O’Connell, the company faces a new wave of instability.

Similarly, Ilya Sutskever, former Chief Scientist at OpenAI, raised $1 billion for his new project Safe Super Intelligence (SSI) in late 2024, but soon Meta lured away co-founder Daniel Gross for its own advanced AI initiatives.
