Recently, I encountered scenarios requiring temporary verification codes again, so I dug out a few Chinese SMS verification platforms I tested before and summarized some pitfalls.
Honestly, virtual numbers are really convenient, especially when testing APIs or registering overseas accounts, saving the hassle of buying a SIM card. The key is that now there are more Chinese SMS verification platforms to choose from, but their quality varies greatly—some can't receive messages at all, others have delays of half a day, which is quite frustrating.
The more reliable ones I've used include: SMS-Activate, which is very fast—messages usually arrive within 10 seconds—and covers many countries; Super Cloud SMS, optimized well for Chinese number segments, with US numbers arriving in about 10-30 seconds, and Chinese numbers even faster, within 5-20 seconds; 5SIM, with a user-friendly interface and clear API documentation, works well with Google, Twitter, and others; Xiaoniao SMS mainly targets domestic apps, with 5-15 seconds delivery time generally no problem; Getsmscode is cheap but can have delays on less popular platforms.
The biggest pitfall with Chinese SMS verification platforms is that numbers may be shared, sometimes flagged as risky or already registered. My experience is to prepare several backup numbers so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. Some platforms support a "one-click number change" feature, which is very practical and saves a lot of time.
Also, if you're just testing APIs, any platform supporting API access is enough; but if you need stable registration for a specific overseas site, it's better to load multiple numbers at once. Some websites block virtual number segments, so in that case, you have to try changing countries.
Overall, Chinese SMS verification platforms can solve many temporary verification issues, but don’t rely on them long-term. Privacy and security risks are present. It's safer to choose reputable, active platforms and avoid buying cheap, unreliable ones.
