I just tried the Tren El Insurgente that connects Toluca with Mexico City, and honestly, it's quite useful if you travel between these areas. After 12 years of construction, they finally inaugurated the last sections recently, and it’s now fully operational.
The route covers 58 kilometers passing through Zinacantepec, Toluca Center, Metepec, Lerma, Santa Fe, Vasco de Quiroga, and Observatorio. The trains arrive approximately every 10 to 15 minutes, so you don’t have to wait too long. It operates from 5 a.m. on weekdays, although on weekends it opens a little later.
Here’s what you need to know about the prices: if you travel within one station in the State of Mexico or Mexico City, it costs $15. Two or three stations are $20. After that, the price increases based on the distance, reaching up to $100 if you go from terminal to terminal. The trip between Santa Fe and Observatorio costs $25, which is the shortest route.
To enter, you need an Integrated Mobility Card or a QR code, and each card is personal—you can’t pass it to someone else. You scan the card at the turnstiles when entering and exiting, and the fare is automatically charged based on where you boarded and alighted.
If you plan to use this Toluca-CDMX train regularly, the card becomes very convenient. Just keep in mind, if you lose it, you won’t get a refund, so take good care of it.
