Just went through the whole SASSA banking update process and honestly, it's way different depending on which grant you're getting. If you're wondering can I change my banking details for SRD grant, the answer is yes but it's super straightforward compared to the permanent grants.
For SRD (that R370 relief grant), everything's online which is actually convenient. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure SMS link. Click it, enter your new bank account details, and you're done. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify though. The key thing is the account has to be in your name - no joint accounts or third-party stuff.
Now if you're on a permanent grant like disability or old age, that's a whole different story. You literally have to go in person to a SASSA office, fill out the Payment Method Change Form, and bring your original ID plus a bank statement or letter from your bank proving the account is yours and active. They send it for verification which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that month's payment and have to wait another cycle.
Also need to update your cellphone number? For SRD it's on their contact portal - enter your ID, new number, and they'll send an OTP to verify. For permanent grants, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit your local office. People keep warning about fake websites so definitely stick to the official SASSA links only.
