Google has recently published a statement saying it will complete the post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration before 2029 to address the threat that future quantum computers pose to existing encryption standards. Google said that quantum computers will pose a major threat to today’s encryption standards, especially encryption and digital signatures. The threat to encryption has already begun to show itself, for example through “store now, decrypt later” attacks; while digital signatures are a future threat that must transition to PQC before being deployed on quantum computers related to cryptography (CRQC). Therefore, Google has adjusted its threat model, prioritizing the PQC migration of identity authentication services, and recommends that other engineering teams take similar steps.
