I've noticed that many beginners in crypto trading ignore one of the most useful tools—the RSI index. This is really a missed opportunity because this indicator can seriously help in identifying entry and exit points.
Here's the gist. The RSI index is an impulse oscillator that shows how quickly and in which direction the price of a cryptocurrency is changing. Visually, it looks like a line oscillating from 0 to 100. When RSI rises above 70, the asset is considered overbought—that's a signal that sellers may take control and the price could drop. When the RSI index falls below 30, it's about oversold conditions—that's a potential entry point since buyers might start to dominate.
Personally, I use a 14-day таймфрейм, as recommended by professionals. On hourly or 4-hour charts, RSI works well for short-term trades. I remember noticing a divergence on Биткойне—the price was making new highs, but the indicator showed lower peaks. That was a bearish signal, and soon the trend reversed. Such divergences are one of the most powerful insights RSI can provide.
When the индекс RSI moves above 50 and continues to rise from the zone of перепроданности, it often indicates that the восходящий тренд is gaining strength. Conversely, if RSI can't stay above 70 and drops below 50, it's a sign of ослабления импульса. But what's important is that relying solely on RSI is dangerous. I always combine it with MACD or стохастическим индикатором. When multiple indicators give the same сигнал, the вероятность успеха increases.
There are also downsides. In боковых рынках, индекс RSI can stay in the нейтральной зоне (40-60) for a long time, not providing clear signals. Plus, during сильных трендах, он can remain in экстремальных значениях долгое время, which can mislead an inexperienced трейдер. Therefore, I recommend using RSI as a валидатор тренда, not as the main инструмент для принятия решений.
Regarding calculations—modern графических платформ всё автоматизировано. You just select the период, and the индикатор calculates itself. The formula is standard: RSI = 100 - [100 / (1 + среднее изменение вверх / среднее изменение вниз)].
