The main suspicion is that government officials responsible for managing the assets were victims of phishing.

According to a report by the local newspaper Yonhap News, the incident occurred in the Gwangju district. No further details have been disclosed so far, but local prosecutors are already investigating the theft that took place in mid-last year.

The report states that it is likely a case of phishing during the process of storing and managing the Bitcoin. However, authorities are still avoiding to definitively confirm what happened.

“We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the loss and the whereabouts of the seized items,” a authorities told Yonhap News, adding: “We cannot confirm any specific details.”

In a phishing attack, criminals perfectly recreate an app, website, or email of a service and convince victims to enter their passwords, thinking they are accessing regular services. With the password, they access the wallets and take the assets.
