Warren Urges OCC to Pause WLF Stablecoin Bank Charter - Crypto Economy

Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote to OCC Comptroller Jonathan Gould urging the agency to delay review of World Liberty Financial’s Jan. 7 application to operate a national trust bank purpose-built for stablecoin services, the letter shows.

She framed the filing as a governance and conflict-of-interest risk because the GENIUS Act of 2025 established the OCC as the primary regulator for federally licensed stablecoin issuers, giving it authority to approve applications, issue rules, supervise, and enforce. Warren said WLF was launched in 2024, announced a stablecoin called USD1 in March 2025, and cited Eric Trump saying the family has probably earned more than $1 billion from WLF and other crypto ventures.

Warren asked Gould to commit to pausing the review until President Trump divests from WLF and eliminates financial conflicts involving him or his family, and requested that commitment in writing by Jan. 20. What to watch now is the OCC’s response and whether Senate crypto market-structure deliberations introduce tighter conflict controls.
