The BTC coins had been untouched since a time when Bitcoin was priced below US$ 15. This Monday (8), the cryptocurrency is trading around US$ 91,000. The movement was confirmed by a blockchain explorer tracking the addresses of the Casascius project.

In October, several addresses associated with the project moved 9.5 BTC. The addresses had been inactive since 2011, indicating that the funds remained untouched for more than 14 years before being transferred.

What was the Casascius project

The so-called Casascius coins were created between 2011 and 2013 by American developer Mike Caldwell. Each unit was a brass, silver, or gold metal coin that contained, under a hologram, the private key to a Bitcoin address. Thus, the holder could, if desired, “redeem” the digital value associated with that physical piece.

The project ended up being discontinued in 2013 after U.S. financial authorities imposed restrictions on the issuance of instruments considered equivalent to currency.

Even so, Casascius coins have become valuable collector’s items, both for their symbolism and for the antiquity of the bitcoins stored in them.
