WeRide just made history in Abu Dhabi. For the first time in the Middle East, fully driverless robotaxis are now live on Uber without any safety driver onboard—and it's only the second city globally (outside the U.S.) to offer this.
The Level 4 autonomous vehicles are running on Yas Island, bookable through a new "Autonomous" category on Uber. WeRide already has 100+ robotaxis operating across the region and is expanding to more areas in Abu Dhabi by year-end.
What's wild: WeRide holds the world's first city-level driverless permit outside the U.S., plus a federal permit from October 2025. They're partnering with local fleet operator Tawasul, and the unit economics are expected to hit breakeven as utilization ramps up.
This isn't just about tech flex—it's a major validation of autonomous vehicle commercialization in a new market. The Middle East robotaxi market just went live.
