When you get a new smartphone, you also need to transfer your Google Authenticator two-factor authentication codes. You can easily transfer them using one of the following two methods.

Method 1: Transfer via QR Code

On your old smartphone:

  1. Open Google Authenticator and tap the menu in the top right corner.
  2. Select “Transfer accounts.”
  3. Choose “Export accounts” and enter your PIN code.
  4. Select the accounts you want to transfer and proceed.
  5. A QR code will be displayed.

On your new smartphone:

  1. Open Google Authenticator and tap the menu in the top right corner.
  2. Select “Transfer accounts” → “Import accounts.”
  3. Tap “Scan QR code.”
  4. Scan the QR code displayed on your old smartphone to complete the transfer.

Method 2: Transfer via backup code (secret key)

On the Google Authenticator app on your new smartphone, tap the “+” button and select “Enter a setup key.” Enter the backup code (secret key) to transfer your account. If you are managing multiple accounts, it’s helpful to give them distinct names for easy identification.

Hint: If the generated code doesn’t work, try syncing your Google Authenticator.
