According to a report from CoinWorld, a national poll published by Japan’s Asahi Shimbun on the 27th showed that over 70% of respondents do not believe that “the United States will truly protect Japan in an emergency situation.” Compared to previous similar surveys, this percentage has significantly risen.
Polls show that in response to the question “In an emergency, will the U.S. truly protect Japan?”, 77% of respondents expressed a negative attitude, while only 15% expressed belief. The Asahi Shimbun pointed out that in previous similar surveys, the proportion of respondents holding a negative attitude towards this question was less than 60%, indicating a significant rise in the results of this survey compared to earlier ones.
In addition, regarding the question of whether “Japan’s diplomacy should follow the intentions of the United States,” 68% of respondents advocated that Japan should achieve diplomatic autonomy as much as possible. The poll also showed that 54% of respondents believe that “the American democratic system has become difficult to serve as a model for other countries.” The Asahi Shimbun analyzed that the Trump administration’s emphasis on “America First” has further intensified Japanese society’s distrust of the United States.
