Hana Securities: The won will weaken further in the near future

Hana Securities said in a note that the Exchange Rate won is currently hovering at a 17-month low against the dollar and could weaken further in the near term. Risk aversion continues to push the dollar higher amid renewed tensions in the Middle East and waning hopes of an early U.S. interest rate cut after stronger-than-expected economic data. Strong demand in the US dollar for foreign investors to repatriate dividends in April could also weigh on the won further. Earlier today, USD/KRW touched the 1400 level for the first time since Nov. 7, 2022, and was trading at 1384 late Monday in the Seoul onshore market.

Interest rate hike bets spurred Japan's 5-year government bond yield to a 13-year high

Japan's 5-year bond yields climbed to their highest level since 2011 amid growing speculation that the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates to curb the yen's weakness. At the close of trading at midday on Friday, Japan's 5-year government bond yield rose 1 basis point to 0.49%, surpassing the previous high of 0.485% set on Nov. 1 last year. Overnight index swap pricing shows that the average overnight interest rate in Tokyo will rise to 0.3% by the end of the year, up from the BOJ's current target range of 0%-0.1%. The Japanese yen fell to a 30-year low against the dollar this week on expectations that interest rate differentials between Japan and the United States will continue to widen. With Japanese government officials stepping up verbal warnings but no clear signs of actual intervention, investors are betting that the Bank of Japan will have to raise interest rates to moderate the yen's decline.

The Federal Reserve once again showed its "dove" throat, and Asian stock markets danced collectively

A key measure for Asian equities posted their biggest gains in four months, helped by strong earnings in Chinese tech stocks and supportive comments from the Federal Reserve on the prospect of U.S. interest rate cuts. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index rose 2.1%, its biggest gain since Nov. 15 last year, with TSMC, Toyota Motor and Samsung Electronics rising the most. Fed policymakers maintained expectations of three rate cuts in 2024 and will begin to slow the pace of bond reductions, suggesting they are not surprised by the recent rebound in price pressures. Chetan Seth, strategist at Nomura Holdings, wrote: "With the risk of Fed rate hikes removed and markets pricing in broadly in line with the dot plot, we believe the focus of Asian equity investors should return to the early themes of AI momentum. "We still expect a soft landing for the United States. ”

JPMorgan analyst Kenneth Worthington said in a note this week that while ETH is poised to benefit from spot ETF speculation, investors' reaction to the dramatic events has been somewhat muted. Since BlackRock first filed its EthereumSpot ETF application on Nov. 9, the price of Ethereum has risen by 20%. But it follows BlackRock's Bitcoin jumped 55% after it first submitted its application for a BitcoinSpot ETF. According to the report, EthereumSpot ETFs are less "hyped" than Bitcoin, likely due to their lower Market Cap and lack of a "first-mover advantage" over Bitcoin. Perhaps the market has learned from the FOMO around BitcoinSpot ETFs, or it may be because the regulatory decisions around whether Ethereum are securities are too vague.

Rising freight rates are impacting the global oil market, with Asian buyers favoring Middle Eastern crudes over U.S. crudes

The surge in freight rates has prompted Asian crude buyers to shift more purchases to Middle Eastern crude, boosting spot market prices. Traders said the surge in vessel bookings has led to soaring ocean freight costs, making long-haul crude oils, such as U.S. crude, too expensive for Asian consumers, causing buyers to turn to spot barrels in the Persian Gulf, pushing up freight premiums. Energy Aspects analysts Anastasia Zania and Christopher Haines said: "Higher freight rates will now benefit Middle Eastern oil products. The strong rise in freight rates on the U.S. Gulf Coast has prompted Japanese and Indian refiners to opt to buy Murban crude, which could hurt the price of WTI crude. The premium of Murban crude futures to Dubai's benchmark crude surged above $1 a barrel on Tuesday, the highest since Nov. 27, PVM Oil Associates data showed.

European stock markets fell on the second day of the New Year, extending their cautious stance on the first day

European stocks fell on Wednesday as investors continued to wait on the sidelines for a clearer dovish signal from the Central Bank. The STOXX Europe 600 closed down 0.9%, its biggest one-day drop since Nov. 10, with cyclical sectors such as construction and mining falling. The Fed will release the minutes later today. Luxury stocks have significantly underperformed, heavyweights LVMH have fallen, and UBS analysts said they expect a weak earnings season for the sector, with limited visibility for the rest of 2024. In the rising sector, pharmaceutical stocks were among the top gainers after Jefferies analysts commented favorably. Shares of Danish container shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk rose after Goldman Sachs upgraded its rating. The company halted its voyages to the Red Sea due to Houthi attacks. Goldman Sachs said the diversion would raise freight costs and improve Maersk's free cash flow.

Gold Finance reported that Rekt FTX sought court approval to estimate its customers' crypto asset claims in U.S. dollars, according to court filings dated Dec. 27. The exchange clarified that this action is essential to prevent any obstacles in the Rekt process, adding that the liquidation of every claim related to digital assets is impractical and unnecessary and would unduly delay these Chapter 11 cases. As a result, FTX recommends estimating the value of Bitcoin at $16,871, Ethereum at $1,258, and SOL at $16. AVAX is $14.19, and the Stable Coin USDT, TUSD, and BUSD are a few cents less than the usual $1. FTX argues that its valuation represents a "fair and reasonable" value of these digital assets as of the Nov. 11 petition date. The motion drew criticism from FTX creditors, who described it as another theft and urged people to oppose the plan.

BlackRock's proposed changes to the structure of the spot BTC ETF will enable authorized participants (APs) to create new shares in the fund with cash (not just crypto), effectively opening the door for banks that cannot hold cryptocurrencies directly, according to Golden Finance. According to a related memorandum document from a meeting between the SEC, BlackRock and Nasdaq on Nov. 28, the cash used by AP in the process can be converted into BTC through intermediaries and held by the ETF's custodian provider. Growing optimism that spot BTC ETFs will soon be approved by the SEC could be a game-changer for the digital asset industry if they can attract large amounts of retail investor capital. Prior to this, it was widely believed that AP should be a large market maker with experience in the crypto space, such as Jane Street, Jump Trading, and Virtu, rather than a bank. But the change means banks can get a piece of the pie and expand their pool of liquidity providers.
