Florida authorities reveal $317,000 cryptocurrency scam

A man in Daytona Beach Shores (Florida) lost over 317,000 USD due to a cryptocurrency investment scam. According to federal records, he was lured in after receiving a wrong number message from a woman claiming to be Astrid Orlov. The two communicated frequently, moved to WhatsApp, and had video calls, although he never saw her face. Orlov steered the conversation towards investments, boasting about successful gold and digital asset trades thanks to her uncle.

She convinced him to invest in the XM DeFi platform, starting with 5,000 USD to buy Bitcoin. He saw “profits” on the website and even withdrew 278 USD, which made him believe it was real. From February 2004 to May 2024, he continued to deposit an additional 312,000 USD. By April, he became suspicious when the money disappeared. Orlov reassured him and sent a fake driver's license. Authorities reported at least 16 other victims, with total losses exceeding 4 million USD.
