Goldman Sachs reports that on April 22, U.S. President Trump said Tuesday that he would remember companies that forfeited their refund claims after the Supreme Court ruled that their large-scale tariffs were illegal. “If they don’t do this(apply for a refund), that would be very wise. If they give up their claims, I will remember them,” Trump said when asked on a program whether companies like Amazon and Apple should seek refunds for tariffs deemed illegal. In February this year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Trump’s imposition of so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on imports from almost all countries under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act(IEEPA) was illegal.
This ruling paved the way for the largest government refund in U.S. history, with the refund process being extremely complex. In scale, this tax rebate is expected to involve over 53 million import declarations. Just one day before Trump’s remarks, U.S. Customs and Border Protection(CBP) officially launched a tariff refund system, with the total refund amount possibly exceeding $160 billion(approximately 1.09 trillion yuan). However, the entire refund process remains uncertain. Thousands of companies have submitted applications.
