The tripartite agreement among the US, Israel, and Iran to implement a temporary ceasefire: crude oil plunges, Bitcoin briefly breaks through $70,000
Geopolitical developments suddenly turn positive, risk assets celebrate collectively
On April 7th, local time, the US, Israel, and Iran unexpectedly reached a consensus on a framework for a temporary ceasefire. Once the news broke, global financial markets reacted sharply.
Crude oil crashes: supply premium rapidly diminishes
As a major oil producer, Iran’s sanctions often create a "geopolitical risk premium" in the crude oil market. Previously, ongoing tensions in the Middle East pushed international oil prices above $85 per barrel multiple times. This temporary ceasefire agreement significantly reduces expectations of restricted Iranian oil exports, causing intraday oil prices to plummet over 5%, with WTI crude falling below the $75 key support level.
The logic behind this movement is clear: the risk of Middle Eastern supply disruptions is temporarily lifted, and the market is re-pricing the "peace dividend."
Bitcoin briefly breaks through $70,000
Contrasting sharply with the oil market, the crypto market experienced a long-awaited rebound. Bitcoin (BTC) briefly surged past $70,000 within hours of the announcement, hitting a high not seen in nearly two weeks. Mainstream cryptocurrencies like Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and others followed suit, with the total crypto market cap rebounding by over $200 billion within 24 hours.
Several factors underpin this crypto rally:
- Improved macro sentiment: Reduced geopolitical risk typically shifts funds from safe-haven assets (gold, government bonds) to high-risk assets (stocks, cryptocurrencies)
- Short squeeze: Previously, the crypto market accumulated large short positions; the price rebound triggered massive short liquidations, further amplifying the rally
- Liquidity improvement: Falling oil prices eased global inflation expectations, reigniting bets on Fed rate cuts, and the liquidity environment became more accommodative
Market reflection: fleeting surge or trend reversal?
Despite the short-term excitement, analysts remain cautious.
Bloomberg senior analyst Mike McGlone warned that unless Bitcoin can effectively reclaim the $75,000 key resistance level, it may face a deep correction in the near term, with strong support around $60,000.
More concerning is the high leverage characteristic of the crypto market, which can be dangerous during upward moves—according to Coinglass data, on April 7th, crypto long liquidations reached nearly a one-month high. While shorts were squeezed, longs also faced significant volatility risks.
Additionally, the durability of the temporary ceasefire itself is questionable. Iran’s nuclear issue involves multiple deep-seated interests, and whether the framework agreement can be translated into a substantive ceasefire remains to be seen. Geopolitical risks could re-emerge at any time and disturb the market again.
