Trump 2.0 begins to slow down, with misjudgments in both domestic and foreign policies

River Wave Takeshi Shikai: The U.S. Trump administration has been in office for 10 months. Although it initially saw results in areas such as investment tax cuts and immigration policy, it is now clearly struggling in diplomacy with China and in controlling prices. In the midterm elections and the presidential election, support among key independent voters for Trump has declined. Trump has begun to partially lower tariffs and revise extreme policies.

“It isn’t the mayoral election in New York City that needs deep reflection, but the gubernatorial election in Virginia,” a senior official of the Trump administration said. In Virginia, the Democratic Party has regained the governorship from the Republicans after 3 years.

The outcome of an election is decided by independent voters. In the last gubernatorial election in 2021, 54% of independent voters voted for the Republican candidate. This time, the situation has changed: 59% voted for the Democratic candidate—19 percentage points higher than the Republican candidate (40%).
