US Media: The United States will permanently close the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan

According to U.S. media reports such as the Associated Press and NBC, the U.S. State Department will permanently shut down the American consulate general in Peshawar, Pakistan. The consulate general is the U.S. diplomatic office closest to the Afghan border, and it is also the “first” overseas mission and consular post to be completely closed since the State Department announced its reorganization. A copy of a notice obtained by the Associated Press shows that this week the State Department has informed Congress of its plans to close the consulate general, and said the move will save $7.5 million per year and will not affect the United States’ continued pursuit of its national interests.
