ME News message, April 4 (UTC+8), local time Friday, U.S. District Judge for the District of Columbia Chief Judge James Boasberg rejected a request by the Department of Justice to rehear the ruling in the criminal case involving Powell. Previously, his ruling had blocked subpoenas issued in connection with the criminal investigation involving Powell. In a ruling dated March 13, Boasberg said the subpoena issued in January last year to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve was issued for an improper purpose—it was intended to force Powell to accept the conditions of President Trump’s demand that he rapidly cut interest rates or resign. The subpoena to Powell was issued by Jennyen Piro, Chief U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia (a staunch supporter of Trump). Piro has promised to continue the investigation and said her office is prepared to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. According to people familiar with the matter, senior officials at the Department of Justice support this appeal decision. This appeal could delay confirmation of the Federal Reserve chair nomination of Kevin Wosch. U.S. Senator Tom Tillis is a Republican member of the Senate Banking Committee. He previously criticized the investigation into Powell, and he vowed to continue blocking Wosch’s nomination while the appeal proceedings are underway. (Source: Jin10)
