You know, I've been following the Musk ecosystem for a long time, and honestly, Kimbal Musk is a figure who is greatly underestimated. The guy in the cowboy hat who always looks a bit different next to Elon. Recently, he sharply criticized Trump on X, stating that the president's tariff policy actually created a hidden tax on American consumers. Interestingly, Kimbal Musk remains a billionaire, but his criticism sounds quite sincere, not just another PR move.
Overall, when you look at these two brothers, obvious family traits are visible: both are from Pretoria, with the same square jawline, straight noses, and green eyes. But while Elon is known for his ambitious projects, Kimbal Musk has focused on quite different things. His wealth, around $700 million, mainly comes from Tesla shares, but that’s not the main part of his story.
I think people forget that both brothers had a tough childhood. Along with sister Tosca, they experienced family violence, which led to their mother Maya’s divorce in 1979. After that, the family emigrated first to Canada, then to the US. And here’s where it gets interesting: Kimbal Musk and Elon co-founded Zip2—a startup for business software. They sold it to Compaq for $307 million in 1999. That was their joint start before the brothers’ paths diverged.
Now, Kimbal Musk is known for his concern for ecology and social issues. And although the brothers sometimes disagree, like recently with Trump, blood is still thicker— they truly love each other. They just each chose their own path.
