The Shenzhen Opera House project has entered a critical stage of main-structure construction. The construction is currently progressing smoothly, and the project is expected to top out the main structure by the end of this year.
As one of Shenzhen’s “major cultural facilities of the new era,” the Shenzhen Opera House project has many highlights in its design and construction. It is understood that the project features a large roof design, using a 100k-square-meter giant flexible curved roof. Its form resembles an elegant ribbon or ocean waves, lightly “floating” above the building.
Zhang Xinxin, project executive manager of CCCC Construction Science & Technology Co., Ltd., said that in terms of the structural system, the project’s large roof uses a flexible structural system. This is the first time in China that Q690GJC high-strength steel has been used on a large scale for major public buildings. The total steel quantity is 43.6k tons. At the same time, large areas employ a cast-in-place fair-faced concrete construction technique. Of note, in acoustic design, the project’s background noise level indicator NR is less than 15, exceeding the relevant standards of the Sydney Opera House, which also brings significant challenges for construction.
During the construction process, the project has applied intelligent construction equipment such as welding robots, surveying and layout robots, and ALC panel installation robots. By deeply integrating cutting-edge technologies including digital design, intelligent manufacturing, and smart construction, it tackles key issues such as the curved structural form of the large roof and complex acoustic design. “We also hope that through green construction and smart construction technologies, the project can be built into a world-class cultural and arts venue,” Zhang Xinxin said.
The Shenzhen Opera House project is located in the Dongjiaotou Area, Shekou, Nanshan District, with a total gross floor area of about 250k square meters. It includes major performance zones such as a 2,100-seat opera hall, an 1,800-seat concert hall, a 1,000-seat small opera hall, and a 500-seat multi-functional theater, as well as public service and cultural-and-creative experience areas, and support and parking equipment building spaces. Once completed, it will become a new arts and culture landmark in Shenzhen and the highest-standard arts palace in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area.
