Trump claims Iran has been "completely defeated"
On March 24, local time, U.S. President Trump said at the White House that the U.S. had “achieved victory” in its actions against Iran, that Iran had been “completely defeated,” and that the current situation is not a “conflict of equal strength,” but rather that the Iranian side has been “thoroughly weakened militarily.”
Trump said that Iran “has no navy, no air force, and lacks effective defensive capabilities,” that the U.S. holds an absolute advantage in the relevant operations, and criticized some media for describing the situation as a “stalemated battle,” saying that claim “does not match the facts.”
He also pointed out that the U.S. has the capability to carry out further strikes on Iran’s key infrastructure, but emphasized that it hopes to end the conflict through negotiations to avoid more losses. Trump said, “This conflict can be ended,” but did not make a definite judgment about the final outcome of the agreement.
On the nuclear issue, Trump reiterated that Iran “will not have nuclear weapons,” and said that the U.S.’s previous military action had “destroyed its nuclear capability.” He also mentioned that if he had not withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal in the first place, Iran might have “already obtained nuclear weapons.”
He further mentioned that in the early stages of the conflict, Iran fired missiles at places including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, and that the relevant actions were “beyond outsiders’ expectations.”
Trump concluded by saying he hopes to end the current “military action” through diplomatic means, and that the goal is to “save the lives of millions of people.”
On March 24, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that this operation is different from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The objective of this round of action is clear: to “eliminate the risk of nuclear capabilities,” rather than prolonged involvement or reconstruction. (CCTV reporter Cao Jian)
