On March 4, local time, the Turkish Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying that a ballistic missile launched from Iran flew into Turkish airspace after traversing the airspace of Iraq and Syria, and was timely detected and intercepted by NATO’s air defense and missile defense systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated at a press conference that day that there is currently no indication that the incident would trigger NATO’s collective defense clause, which stipulates that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all members. A NATO spokesperson stated that NATO condemns Iran’s missile actions against Turkey. Sources say that this is the first time NATO forces have intercepted an Iranian missile heading toward a member country’s airspace since the outbreak of the current Middle East conflict. (CCTV News)
