The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, hosted a regular press conference on the 27th.

A reporter asked: It has been reported that a Chinese postdoctoral researcher unfortunately committed suicide the day after being questioned by U.S. law enforcement officials. What is the Foreign Ministry’s comment on this?

Lin Jian: We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and have lodged a solemn representation to the U.S. side. The Chinese consulate in the U.S. has promptly contacted the family of the individual and is providing active assistance to the family.

For some time, the U.S. side has been politicizing the concept of national security, indiscriminately questioning and harassing Chinese students and scholars, infringing upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens, disrupting the normal atmosphere of cultural exchange between China and the U.S., and creating a serious “chilling effect.”

China urges the U.S. to thoroughly investigate this case, to provide a responsible account to the victim’s family and to China, to stop discriminatory law enforcement against Chinese scholars and students in the U.S., and to cease fabricating various wrongful cases. We will continue to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens.
