【Caixin】 Since late February, the United States and Israel have carried out military raids on Iran, and Iran has subsequently retaliated. The war has escalated rapidly and has now lasted for nearly four weeks. Energy facilities in multiple locations across the Persian Gulf region have been damaged, the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted, and the global energy market has been severely impacted.

On March 25, former Finnish prime minister Ahonen said at the Boao Forum for Asia 2026 Annual Conference that geopolitical conflict could accelerate the energy crisis, but the crisis also presents an opportunity to drive the energy transition.

“The current crisis is a warning to every country: each must continuously increase its share of independent oil production, while also finding alternative solutions for oil and gas resources.” Ahonen said that, for businesses, the near-term investment returns for transitioning oil and gas are limited; however, in the long run, such investments are economically viable to a certain extent. He also cited a quote by former British prime minister Winston Churchill, saying that all sides “should not waste a good crisis.”
