Lamma Winds Power Station has reached its 20-year design lifespan, and the facility will be dismantled at a later date.

CLP Power states that the Lamma Winds Power Station, completed and commissioned in 2006 on Lamma Island, was Hong Kong’s first commercial-scale wind power project. Since most of the station’s dedicated parts and backup components have been discontinued, CLP Power has actively explored different solutions. However, due to current market supply and on-site environmental constraints, there are no commercially available wind turbines suitable for replacement at the original site. To ensure public safety, ceasing operation is a prudent and timely decision.

CLP Power says that since its commissioning, the Lamma Winds Power Station has generated over 16 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, reducing approximately 13 million kilograms of carbon emissions, equivalent to the amount absorbed by about 560,000 trees in one year.

Looking ahead, CLP Power will continue to support and promote renewable energy development, actively cooperate with the government to explore regional collaborations for zero-carbon electricity supply, and work with all sectors of society to achieve the goals of “net-zero power generation” and carbon neutrality by 2050.
