Next to the Jing-Harbin High-Speed Rail, machines are roaring, and a steel-structured substation is taking shape. It is currently in the exterior installation phase. Once completed by the end of this year, electricity will be continuously supplied from here to Huairou Science City, meeting the power needs of major national scientific research projects.

According to State Grid Beijing Electric Power Company, all 83 grid infrastructure projects will fully resume work and production in the first quarter of 2026. Beijing’s power grid construction is accelerating. This year, State Grid Beijing Power has vigorously implemented projects such as the “3 x 100,” peak summer and winter support, and livelihood projects, fully supporting major city projects and high-tech industry layouts, promoting energy cooperation between Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, and actively serving residents’ electricity needs.

At the site of the 500 kV transmission and transformation project in Huairou Science City, a articulated boom lift extends its long “arm,” transporting construction workers to high altitudes to install the exterior facade. “With the articulated boom lift, exterior wall construction no longer requires scaffolding, greatly improving construction efficiency, while also enhancing safety, progress, and green building standards,” said Wang Tao, project manager at Beijing Electric Power Engineering Co., Ltd.

The Huairou Science City 500 kV transmission and transformation project officially broke ground in March 2024. It will become Beijing’s first indoor, steel-structured 500 kV hub substation. After commissioning, it will further improve Beijing’s 500 kV double-ring network structure. “Compared to traditional outdoor 500 kV hub substations, moving switchgear indoors can significantly reduce the substation’s land footprint, saving land resources,” said Ni Haoran, owner’s project manager at State Grid Beijing Construction Consulting.

Currently, the Huairou Science City 500 kV substation has completed the steel structure topping for the distribution device building. Precise installation of 293 steel columns is underway, with over a thousand main and secondary beams erected, totaling 7,389 tons of steel—equivalent to the weight of 4,900 passenger cars.

“We insist on steady resumption of work, rapid start-up, and strong guarantees, strictly controlling the resumption process, consolidating safety foundations, and ensuring that all grid projects that should resume do so, and all that should start do so, striving for a ‘good start’ in grid investment in the first quarter,” said Zou Yu, director of the Construction Department at State Grid Beijing Electric Power.

Focusing on Huairou Science City, a core area for national strategic scientific and technological strength, State Grid Beijing Power is accelerating the high-quality construction of supporting grid projects. In addition to the Huairou Science City 500 kV transmission project, the Luoshan 220 kV, Yongsheng 110 kV, and Chenga Zhuang 110 kV transmission projects have also resumed work. Among them, Chenga Zhuang substation, as Beijing’s first fully autonomous and controllable new-generation substation, will demonstrate advanced technologies such as one-click remote control and intelligent patrols after commissioning, providing a practical platform for new power system development.

Furthermore, several key grid projects are progressing simultaneously. The Fangshan 500 kV substation capacity expansion project has fully entered construction, increasing the capacity of two existing 750 MVA main transformers to 1200 MVA, with planned completion within the year, significantly enhancing power supply capacity in southwestern Beijing. The Houjie 220 kV transmission project in Chaoyang District has resumed as scheduled, with on-site steel structure hoisting underway. It is planned to be completed and put into operation by 2027, providing reliable power support for the Fourth Embassy District, Jinzhan International Cooperation Service Area, and other regions, continuously optimizing the power grid layout in the capital’s urban functional zones.

In 2026, State Grid Beijing Power will coordinate the construction of 111 transmission and transformation projects, including the Fengtai 500 kV and Zhizao 220 kV projects. During the 14th Five-Year Plan, the company will focus on grid development, accelerating the Jijing DC ultra-high voltage project, planning six external power receiving channels such as the 500 kV Xiheying-Fangshan line, and implementing five 500 kV, 74 220 kV, and 231 110 kV transmission projects. The goal is to build a modern, resilient, green, harmonious, digital, and controllable power grid system, ensuring high-quality energy supply to support Beijing’s development as a world-class, harmonious, and livable city.
