Iranian warship in distress in waters south of Sri Lanka, 35 people rescued
According to Sri Lankan media reports on the 4th, an Iranian warship ran into trouble in the waters south of Sri Lanka this morning. The cause is still unclear, but 35 crew members have been rescued. The report states that the distressed vessel is the Iranian Navy frigate “Dena,” with approximately 180 crew members. The incident occurred about 40 nautical miles (approximately 74 kilometers) south of the southern coastal city of Galle. The Sri Lankan Navy immediately dispatched ships to carry out rescue operations after receiving the distress signal. So far, 35 people have been rescued and transferred to a hospital in Galle. Sri Lanka also sent a plane to assist in search and rescue efforts in the area. The report quotes Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G. L. Peiris as saying that the waters where the “Dena” ran into trouble do not belong to Sri Lankan territorial waters. (Xinhua)
