ByteDance sells Moonton Technology for over $6 billion, Zhang Yunfan to continue serving as CEO

Crypto Finance Wang Min On March 20, ByteDance’s gaming division head Zhang Yunfan released an internal memo confirming that the company has reached an agreement with Savvy Games Group, a subsidiary of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, to make Moutong Technology a wholly owned subsidiary of Savvy.

According to disclosures, the transaction amount exceeds $6 billion (approximately 41.3 billion RMB), representing about a 50% premium over ByteDance’s $4 billion acquisition in 2021.

After the deal is completed, Moutong Technology will continue to operate independently, with its headquarters remaining in Shanghai. Zhang Yunfan will continue to serve as CEO, and the existing management structure will remain unchanged.

The internal memo also clarified employee incentive arrangements, with some long-term incentives granted in the past but not yet vested being accelerated for vesting and distribution. A new performance-based incentive plan is also planned.

It is reported that Savvy will acquire Moutong’s main entity and related core assets, including:

  • Moutong’s flagship MOBA product Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB, known as “Decisive Peak” in China), along with the ownership of the Mobile Legends IP, related content, and products.

  • Moutong Shanghai studio, which is developing major titles such as the top-down shooter “Top Zone”, casual PvP and PvE games, and ARPG competitive projects.

  • Moutong Guangzhou Lighthouse studio, which is working on titles including “Codename: Lovania” first revealed in December last year, “Shita” with a new PV released in December, and “Yuming Zhi” announced in 2023.

Data shows that Moutong’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has a strong user base and a mature esports ecosystem in Southeast Asia.

Founded in 2014, Moutong Technology is headquartered in Shanghai. Its products include “Decisive Peak Mobile Legends: Bang Bang”, “Tide Watcher”, “Magic Chess: Go Go”, “Fantasy World and Adventure Mobile Legends: Adventure”, and “Magic Rush: Heroes”.
