【Salary】Hong Kong Workers' Median Monthly Salary Rises 3.5% Year-on-Year - Finance Industry Not the Highest Paid - Which Industry Offers the Highest Salaries?
Hong Kong workers’ median monthly salary has increased! The Census and Statistics Department announced on Monday (23rd) that from May to June 2025, the median monthly salary for Hong Kong workers was HKD 21,200, a 3.5% year-on-year increase. Salary differences between men and women persist, with male employees earning a median of HKD 24,200 per month and female employees HKD 18,700, both up 3.4% annually, with a gap of HKD 5,500.
By industry, education and public administration (excluding government) have the highest median monthly salary at HKD 34,100, up 3.9% year-on-year; followed by finance and insurance, with a median of HKD 34,000, increasing 3.8%; third is electricity and gas supply; wastewater treatment, waste management, and pollution control activities, with a median monthly salary rising 4% annually to HKD 32,200.
In terms of year-on-year growth in median monthly salary, property management, security, and cleaning services outperformed others, increasing 5.1% to HKD 15,500; next is travel agencies, booking services, and related activities, up 5% to HKD 17,000; third is information and communications, up 4.7% to HKD 28,600.
Over 15,000 people are paid based on the minimum wage
Regarding hourly wages, the median hourly wage is HKD 85.7, up 3.4% year-on-year. Hong Kong’s current statutory minimum wage will increase to HKD 42.1 per hour starting May 1, 2025. According to the statistics, 15,600 people are paid based on the minimum wage.
By industry, property management, security, and cleaning services have the lowest median hourly wage at HKD 55, up 3.8% annually; the next lowest is miscellaneous activities (elderly care homes, laundry and dry cleaning services, hairdressing and other personal services, local courier services, and food processing and production), with a median of HKD 60, up 3.7%; third is retail, with a median hourly wage of HKD 61.3, up 3.6%.
Male employees have a median hourly wage of HKD 96.8, while female employees earn HKD 75.8, a difference of HKD 21. Analyzing by age group, employees aged 35 to 44 have the highest median hourly wage at HKD 100, followed by those aged 25 to 34 at HKD 90, and those aged 45 to 54 at HKD 86.4.
