Ripple's Prime Broker Acquisition Strategy and the Complete Picture of XRP Ecosystem Strengthening
The series of corporate acquisitions initiated by Ripple is a carefully calculated strategy not just for business expansion, but to strengthen the long-term competitiveness of the XRP ecosystem. As CEO Brad Garlinghouse emphasized in his speech at the New York Economic Club, these investments are designed to realize the vision of institutional finance in the cryptoassets industry.
Key to Expanding Institutional Services: Hidden Road’s Prime Brokerage Function
In 2025, the most notable acquisition carried out by Ripple was the acquisition of the prime brokerage firm Hidden Road, for which it invested $1.25 billion. This acquisition aimed to directly address the challenges faced by institutional investors when entering the XRP ecosystem.
The functions of Hidden Road as a prime broker provide services that financial institutions require, such as lending for institutions, risk management, and trading infrastructure. By incorporating this prime broker function under Ripple, a payment environment on the blockchain will achieve a “user experience closer to traditional finance.” This allows conservative financial institutions to confidently adopt XRP-based solutions.
Building the XRP Ecosystem through Diversified Infrastructure Investment
Alongside the acquisition of a prime broker, Ripple has acquired the corporate finance platform GTreasury, custody companies Metaco and Palisade, and the stablecoin platform Rail, establishing a multi-layered infrastructure.
These acquisitions complement each other. While the prime broker function supports the “trading” aspect, the custody services handle “asset storage”, the stablecoin Rail manages “liquidity”, and GTreasury oversees “fund management”, creating a division of labor.
As Garlinghouse said, “All acquisitions are executed under a consistent vision of further enhancing the utility of XRP.”
The Competitive Advantage Created by Focusing on the Banking Sector
Ripple’s decision to target banks as its initial customer base was considered unconventional in the cryptoassets industry at that time. While many projects were taking a confrontational stance against the existing financial system, Ripple adopted a strategy that prioritized integration with traditional financial institutions.
This choice has brought significant fruits in the long term. Banks serve as the touchpoints for billions of users, and the judgment that collaboration with financial institutions is essential for blockchain technology to reach mass adoption was correct. As a result, Ripple has established its position as an infrastructure provider in international remittances.
The establishment of a regulatory environment promotes market maturity
Garlinghouse also points out the importance of regulatory clarity. As long as it remains ambiguous whether cryptoassets are classified as “currency,” “securities,” or “commodities,” it will not promote the entry of large financial institutions.
He suggested that if clearer rules are established, institutional investors will be able to engage with digital assets with more confidence, accelerating adoption in the global market. It is only when regulatory frameworks and corporate acquisition strategies function as two wheels of a vehicle that true market maturity will be achieved.
Strategic Value of On-Chain Liquidity and Stablecoins
RLUSD (the stablecoin issued by Ripple) is a core component of this ecosystem strategy. By deepening on-chain liquidity, it evolves into a more practical platform for developers and institutions building on the XRP Ledger.
Improving liquidity means not just enhancing transaction efficiency but also broadening the range of business models that can be realized on the blockchain. As more RLUSD circulates, financial activities such as payments, investments, and fundraising will be conducted more naturally on the XRP Ledger.
Attitude of Viewing Market Adjustments as Growth Opportunities
Garlinghouse sees the cryptoasset market’s current experience of the crypto winter as a constructive “reset.” During market adjustment phases, companies tend to narrow their strategies, refine their essential value propositions, and focus on solving real problems. Historically, the downturns of each cycle have ultimately made the entire industry more mature.
Ripple’s series of acquisition strategies demonstrates a commitment to steadily building infrastructure based on a long term vision, even amidst market uncertainties. Through multifaceted investments, from prime brokerage functions to liquidity foundations, the XRP ecosystem continues to strengthen its competitiveness in institutional finance.
