Apple Crosses Into Healthcare: Studio Display XDR Monitor Now Supports DICOM Imaging for Radiologists
Apple announced the new Studio Display XDR professional monitor last night, designed to perfectly complement Mac, starting at 24,999 yuan.
This 27-inch 5K Retina XDR display is aimed not only at creative professionals in film production, graphic design, and 3D animation but also introduces medical imaging capabilities for the first time, allowing it to be used directly for radiology diagnostics.
Compared to many dedicated medical imaging monitors, which are more expensive, the Studio Display XDR offers a high cost-performance ratio.
According to Apple, the Studio Display XDR includes built-in DICOM medical imaging presets and a Medical Imaging Calibrator, enabling radiologists to view diagnostic images directly on the monitor without needing separate specialized medical displays. The monitor supports switching from standard viewing mode to radiology mode with one click, facilitating workflow for medical professionals.
Apple states that the Medical Imaging Calibrator is awaiting approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is expected to be available in the U.S. market soon.
Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple, John Ternus, said, “The Studio Display XDR is a huge leap for professional displays, with Mini LED backlight, 2000 nits peak HDR brightness, advanced color accuracy, and 120Hz refresh rate, transforming workflows in filmmaking, design, printing, and 3D animation.”
IT Home’s specifications for the new Studio Display XDR:
27-inch (diagonal) 5K Retina XDR display
Resolution 5120×2880, pixel density 218 ppi, mini LED backlight with 2304 local dimming zones
Typical brightness 1000 nits (SDR)
Peak brightness 2000 nits (HDR)
120Hz refresh rate + adaptive sync (range 47~120Hz)
Supports 1 billion colors
P3 + Adobe RGB wide color gamut, over 80% coverage of Rec. 2020
True Tone technology
The new Studio Display XDR features a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with desktop view support; also equipped with a “high-fidelity six-speaker system,” supporting spatial audio, and a three-microphone array for “studio-level” audio pickup.
Apple states that the purpose of introducing this new feature is to continue improving technology available in healthcare to enhance patient care. For decades, medical professionals and developers have been leveraging Apple’s innovative products and frameworks to help achieve better patient outcomes, expand research opportunities, and improve healthcare system efficiency.
