Xinhua News Agency, Tehran, March 22 (Reporter Shadati, Yin Kuo) — The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 22nd stating that the Strait of Hormuz has not been blocked. Under the necessary measures taken in accordance with the war situation, ships can still continue to navigate through this waterway. The statement also outlines Iran’s principled stance on shipping and navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated in the declaration that after the United States and Israel launched military aggression against Iran, the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz has become dangerous, directly affecting regional shipping and navigation safety. To exercise legitimate self-defense rights, Iran has taken a series of measures to ensure that aggressors and their supporters do not misuse the Strait of Hormuz to advance their aggressive objectives.
The statement said that ships belonging to the United States, Israel, and other countries involved in the aggression do not meet normal and non-hostile passage conditions, and Iran will handle them according to law; ships from other countries or non-hostile ships associated with them, as long as they have not participated in or cooperated with aggression against Iran and comply with Iran’s announced safety regulations and measures, can safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz after coordination with Iranian authorities.
The statement emphasized the need to fully restore the sustainable security and stability of the Strait of Hormuz. The military aggression and threats against Iran must cease, actions by the U.S. and Israel that undermine Iran’s stability must stop, and Iran’s legitimate interests must be fully respected.
Iranian Foreign Minister Alaghazi elaborated on these principles via social media. He also emphasized that Iran will not succumb to threats: “It’s better to respect than to threaten. Without trade freedom, there is no freedom of navigation.”
U.S. President Trump posted on social media on the evening of the 21st, threatening to open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours or destroy “all kinds of power plants” in Iran.
