Apple announced on Monday the launch of AirPods Max 2, an upgraded version of their flagship over-ear headphones, featuring enhanced active noise cancellation and a series of functions previously introduced in the AirPods Pro lineup.

In a statement, Apple said, AirPods Max 2’s active noise cancellation is 1.5 times better than the original model released at the end of 2020. In 2024, Apple made a minor update to the AirPods Max, adding a USB-C port and supporting lossless wired audio.

The headphones are priced at $549, the same as the previous generation, and will be available for pre-order starting March 25, with an expected official release in early April. Apple offers five color options for the AirPods Max 2: Blue, Purple, Orange, Midnight, and Starlight (Light Gold).

Additionally, Apple replaced the older chip in this premium headset with the newer H2 chip, enabling features like Live Translation and Conversation Awareness. When the user speaks, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume. The AirPods Max 2 also supports Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts noise cancellation based on the environment.

Loud Sound Reduction is another feature carried over from the AirPods Pro series, designed to reduce the intensity of sirens, construction noise, and other harsh sounds.

At the same time, Apple upgraded the microphones in the AirPods Max 2 to achieve “studio-grade audio recording” and reduced wireless latency, providing better performance during gaming.

This release comes shortly after Apple launched several new products earlier this month, including the iPhone 17e, the $599 MacBook Neo, and the new Studio Display XDR. They also announced upgraded versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Air, and Studio Display.
