Middle East tensions continue to escalate; UN calls for civilian protection to prevent conflict escalation
On the 9th local time, UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated at the regular press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York that the UN has seen reports of an attack on a girls’ elementary school in Iran, resulting in the deaths of children. The UN has expressed serious concern. Some U.S. officials have already announced that they will investigate the incident, and the UN looks forward to the investigation results being made public soon. Additionally, Dujarric said that as the situation in the Middle East remains tense, the UN is deeply concerned about the rising civilian casualties and humanitarian impact. He also pointed out that the tense situation in the Middle East could have broader effects on global energy transportation and economic stability. The UN calls on all parties to abide by international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian facilities, and work through diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation. (CCTV News)
