Gelonghui, March 14 — According to Nikkei Chinese, the price of one of the rare earth elements, yttrium, used in semiconductors and military applications, has experienced a significant surge, soaring approximately 140 times within a year. After 2026, the upward trend in yttrium prices is expected to accelerate further. Data from UK research firm Argus Media shows that, based on European prices outside of China, yttrium reached $850 per kilogram on February 26, the highest level since 2012 with comparable data. A year ago, the price was only around $6, but it is now rapidly increasing.

Among many rare earth elements, yttrium is characterized by its wide range of uses. For example, it can be applied in LEDs and medical laser devices. It is also used as a coating material for components in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In military applications, yttrium is used as a material to enhance the heat resistance of aircraft engines.
