Cainiao Announces Global Expansion Plan: Large-Scale Robot Warehousing Network to Launch Overseas by 2026

On March 12, 2026, Cainiao, Alibaba’s logistics giant, officially announced a major global strategy: the company plans to build and operate a large-scale robot warehouse network in key cross-border e-commerce markets such as Hong Kong, the United States, and Europe by 2026.

This move marks Cainiao’s overseas logistics infrastructure entering the “full automation” stage, aiming to provide faster local shipping and delivery support for global cross-border e-commerce platforms and merchants through advanced technology.

Technology Core: In-House Developed Robots and AI “Brain”

According to Cainiao officials, the warehouse network will fully adopt its self-developed next-generation storage robots and AI intelligent scheduling systems. Compared to industry-standard automation solutions, Cainiao’s new system has three core technological advantages:

  • High Storage Density: By optimizing robot path planning and shelf structures, the new generation of robot warehouses improves storage space utilization by approximately 20%-30% compared to traditional warehouses.

  • Physical AI Scheduling System: Utilizing proprietary AI models, this system enables real-time task allocation, obstacle avoidance prediction, and optimal path planning for large robot fleets in complex environments, significantly reducing congestion risks.

  • Operational Efficiency Leap: Cainiao Vice President and Global Supply Chain Division General Manager Shuai Yong pointed out that through deep integration of AI and robotics, warehouses in key overseas markets will greatly enhance “next-day” and “second-day” delivery service coverage.

Strategic Footprint: Covering Key Growth Areas in Europe and America

According to the deployment plan, these automated warehouse nodes will focus on the following countries and regions:

  • Asia: Hong Kong (serving as a global cross-border transit hub).

  • Europe: Netherlands, Spain, France, Germany (covering core EU consumer markets).

  • North America: United States (strengthening local last-mile delivery networks).

Industry Perspective: From “Capacity Competition” to “Intelligent Competition”

Industry analysts believe that as global e-commerce enters an era of stock competition, logistics certainty has become a core competitive advantage for merchants. Cainiao’s large-scale deployment of overseas robot networks is not only aimed at reducing labor costs but also at solving efficiency bottlenecks in “last mile” delivery and integrated warehousing and distribution in cross-border logistics.

Currently, Cainiao operates over 40 overseas warehouses in 18 countries worldwide. This comprehensive upgrade to self-developed robotic warehouses reflects the logistics industry’s accelerating shift from simple “capacity coverage” to “intelligent operational capabilities.”

This report is based on Cainiao’s official announcement published in March 2026.
