Analysis: G7 "Epic-Scale" Oil Reserve Release May Fail to Resolve Oil Crisis
Mars Finance News, March 15 — The Kobeissi Letter citing JPMorgan data states that the G7 countries coordinating the release of strategic oil reserves can only deliver about 1.2 million barrels of oil per day. Historically, the peak emergency release was about 1.4 million barrels per day. However, due to ongoing oilfield modernization and lower inventories, the operational flexibility of U.S. oil reserves may be below the 1 million barrels per day level seen in 2022. Meanwhile, due to the Strait of Hormuz blockade, approximately 16 million barrels of crude oil are stranded in the Persian Gulf each day. A release of 1.2 million barrels per day can only fill about 7.5% of the 16 million barrel daily gap. Analysis indicates that emergency reserves can buy time but cannot compensate for lost supply or resolve supply bottlenecks.
